About San Francisco
San Francisco is one of the most exciting and eclectic urban centers in the United States. Beautifully situated on the edge of the San Francisco Peninsula, it's one of the most visited cities in the world. Its distinctive neighborhoods, vibrant cultural life and history all attract millions of visitors each year.
Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to settle the area, establishing a mission there in the 18th century. The area belonged to Spain until 1821 and subsequently to Mexico. A settlement named Yerba Buena was established in 1776, and when the United States claimed California during the Mexican-American War, the name of the town was changed to San Francisco.
San Francisco's population exploded during the Gold Rush of 1849, increasing from 1,000 to 25,000 in less than two years. Many of its new residents came from China to work on the First Transcontinental Railroad, and the city's enormous Chinatown district of today is a legacy of that wave of immigrants.
The city continued to grow but was devastated by an earthquake and fire in 1906. Following the disaster, San Francisco rebuilt and thrived. In modern history, it is closely associated with the 1950s Beat generation and the counterculture movement of the 1960s, including the 1967 Summer of Love. In the 1990s, the fortunes of its residents rose and then fell with the boom and crash of the dot-com industry.
Today, San Francisco's hilly streets and cable cars, its varied and stunning architecture and its Golden Gate Bridge are iconic images of one of America's most fascinating cities. The city's mild weather, gorgeous natural setting, diverse population and reputation for freewheeling lifestyles continues to attract people from all over the world.
